Defending the 2nd Amendment

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas recently wrote that “The right to keep and bear arms is apparently this court’s constitutional orphan.” As a life long conservative supporter of the 2nd Amendment, I find this to be deeply troubling. It’s the 2nd Amendment which provides protection for the rest of the Constitution and the other Amendments. It’s not an amendment to hunt ducks. It’s an amendment to safeguard against government tyranny and to ensure self‐protection. We as a nation can’t afford for it to be orphaned, it must be cherished by all.

Many of you may have learned gun and hunter safety from my dad Orville Riege who taught for many years. He was an arms dealer and owned a
home business, “Orville’s Gun and Ammo.” As a young girl, I grew up with guns in the house and have fond memories of helping my dad reload shells. My sons and grandchildren have grown up around guns in our house. I enjoy shooting and am always happy to accept an invitation to go to the range for a fun day of marksmanship.

Recently, some of you may have received a deliberately misleading flyer supporting my opponent’s campaign saying that I want to restrict
our 2nd Amendment rights. I want you to hear it from me first hand, that’s simply not true. The flyer supporting my opponent twisted my words from a candidate forum where I unambiguously stated, “I’m definitely for protecting our 2nd Amendment, no question about that.” The discussion continued about whether or not people should be able to bring loaded rifles into Legislative Hearings at the State Capitol. I responded that the Nebraska State Patrol is charged with protecting our Governor and keeping our lawmakers safe. Open Carry within the State Capitol may need to be looked at as a security issue to ensure that mentally unstable people are not trying to assassinate lawmakers. My opponent’s
logic says this type of common‐sense comment means I’m ‘trying to restrict the 2nd Amendment.’ I encourage you to listen first hand to the candidate forum on YouTube. I’d be happy to send you the link and you can determine yourself who is telling the truth. When you deliberately mislead voters on a fundamental issue like the 2nd Amendment, how can we believe what she says on any other issue?

As a State Senator in the Legislature, I will be a strong opponent of so‐called “Red Flag” laws that are nothing more than thinly veiled attempts to do an end run around the 2nd Amendment. I will support efforts to expand Concealed Carry reciprocity and I will be vigilant to stop efforts to place restrictions on ammunition or re‐loading supplies. And I’m on record as supporting efforts to reform Nebraska’s “Castle Doctrine” laws. I believe that we have a right to use force regardless of location. I do not believe that there must be a duty to retreat from anyplace that a person can lawfully be.

If you support the 2nd Amendment, then I welcome your support of my candidacy. I’ve been reloading shells since before my opponent was
born. There’s too much at stake to leave this issue to a rookie. To dialogue with me about this important issue or to learn more, visit my website
